Where I Interned
My internship took place at the River Church (TRC) with Andy Sloan, the youth pastor. Andy is in charge of the middle and high school youth groups as well as many youth events that take place at or through the church. |
My Work
I created an after school program for middle schoolers to come after school and hangout, as I watch over them. I provided food and drinks. A lot of parents had been asking the youth pastor to make something like this, however he didn't really have the time. So I was given the opportunity to take this program under my wings.
Reflection
Through this internship, I found that by working with a small group I did a good job at connecting with kids one on one. This program created a safe place for kids to come, relax, and hangout with their friends as they wait for their parents to finish up with work. At some points it was hard to find activities to do as a group because some of the kids wanted to do their own thing. I would compromise with the kids to have some time to do things on their own and then some time to hangout as a whole group. If this program was to be continued their should be more outreach to the middle schoolers and parents, so they know that this is an option. We didn't have very many kids come and I think it could have been more fun and allowed us to have the ability to do group adventures.
I don't plan on continuing this program because I have other goals for this next year, but I hope to continue to work with kids in the future. This summer I plan on traveling through Europe and Africa. In Africa, I will be helping out at an orphanage that I did an internship with last year. Then after Africa, I am doing a DTS in New Zealand.

This is the family I will be helping when I go back to Mozambique this summer.
