10th Grade POL

3 celebrations:
One thing I can celebrate from this semester is keeping my grades up. I have always been a straight A student, and as I get older and I begin to learn new material and it becomes harder to keep those grades up. As it gets more difficult it also becomes more stressful to try to keep them up. In order to keep them up I first do everything I can on my own and then got critiques and help on my work from peers and then from teachers when I needed it. I continue to doing my best work throughout the year, and on all the work I am given. Keeping the grades I have is very important to me because it lets me know that I am doing my best which encourages me. When a grade starts to drop it tells me that I may be starting to let the work slip by and I need to work harder. Also, keeping up grades can help me to have more options when it comes to colleges and jobs. Since I have not decided what I want to do after I leave Animas High School it would best benefit me to keep as many options open as possible. I will keep working my hardest and trying to keep those choices available for myself, so that when the time comes to make a decision about what I want to do I can do what I have picked. I hope to have what I want to do and where I want go figured out before school is over.
A second celebration I have for myself after this semester is what I have been doing after school. Outside of school I have been going to The River Church. I believe this is a celebration for many reasons. One of those reasons is because after going to this church I have become very close with many people there who I now consider a part of my family. Another reason The River Church being in my life causes a celebration for me is because I have become very involved there in my youth group, in the middle schoolers’ youth group, and with the young kids at the church. We do a lot with my youth group and spend a lot of time together which I really enjoy. With the middle schoolers I have become a leader and I get to help out a lot and gain my youth pastor’s and the student’s trust. I have also been helping out with the young kids during church and whenever they need a babysitter. I have started to help out a lot sometimes being paid and other times doing it for fun. I feel like I have been able to make a difference and really get to know some of the families as well. This can help with future goals because I have considered possibly being a missionary after I get out of school, and in order to do that I will need to be able to comfortably talk to those around me and help lead who I am helping or working with.
A third celebration in my year so far is being able to work with my peers on projects. In the past I have been hesitant to work with others unless they are my friends. When someone is my friend I know how to work with them. If they work really hard then we can get things done and when we are distracted or someone who is a friend isn’t working I can talk to them and get us back on track. However when I am working with someone who I don’t know well or don’t talk to much then our group usually can not get work done efficiently. This year I have worked on being with new groups of people and still getting the work done. I try talking to them and taking a lead role in the group. I will give us each something to do to benefit the project, and when someone is not taking it seriously or not working then I will step up and try to get them focused or offer some help on it.
2 needed improvements:
I believe that although I have improved already on working with my peers I should continue to work on my leadership skills. I believe to be a leader and have these leadership skills you must set an example for those you are with, to motivate, and to bring out the greatness already in people rather than try to give them greatness. There is a quote that describes how a leader should act and it is, “The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.” This was said by Jim Rohn. I may have been able to step up some in my group work and try to keep my group members on task, but I should continue to work on my leadership skills so that I feel comfortable talking to people I don’t know as well. This will help me in school and outside of school. It will help me in school because I can talk to the group easier and try to get them more engaged in their work rather than suggesting something they could do and then having to take over for them. It will also help me out of school, for example when I am babysitting at the church or working with the middle schoolers I can take some leadership roles to help out adults and gain the trust of those I look up to and those who look up to me. I hope to continue to build on these leadership skills throughout the rest of the year, and use these skills to help me grow.
A second thing I should grow on in the next semester would be not getting sidetracked in class when doing work. I always try to work hard and I manage to get my work done every time. Sometimes I can get it done in class, while others times I have to do it at home. Even though I get the work done, I still get sidetracked and have a hard time focusing in class. Most of the time some other things will spark my interest and I’ll stop doing my work until I remember that I am supposed to be completing an assignment. I tend to do this a lot and it becomes stressful when I get home and realize I have to complete assignments from class as well as some homework. I still do them and work very hard on them, but I should not make the decisions that have me more stressed and have to take work home to do when I was given the time during the school day to complete it.
1 Question:
How can I work on being more comfortable talking to people I don’t know well in order to improve on my leadership skills?
